Iron deficiency despite a balanced, healthy diet?
A balanced diet should result in the intake of all the nutrients needed and yet many women have an iron deficiency that they can hardly get under control. This can have different, very individual reasons. This is what the German Nutrition Society (DGE) says:
Only about 10-15% of the iron in food is actually available to the body. (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment )
Many people then turn to iron tablets, which often do not solve the problem but cause discomfort when taken.
Our approach: help the body to better metabolize iron from balanced food
Instead of supplying the body with iron through iron tablets, we looked at what could improve the absorption of iron. Studies have shown that lactoferrin improves iron absorption, see diagram.
What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a protein naturally occurring in milk. It is also found in many body secretions, wherever a quick response to pathogens is required. Lactoferrin is therefore a natural component of the immune system .
Fascinatingly, it has been observed that milk after birth from underweight babies has higher lactoferrin levels than from normal weight babies. In nature, things are rarely coincidental. Based on these and other fascinating observations and investigations, a 2022 study is entitled:
Lactoferrin has been part of scientific debate for decades. Lactoferrin has been approved as a food in the EU since 2012 after it was proven safe to consume and studies indicated that lactoferrin improved iron absorption. Thanks to modern extraction processes, lactoferrin is increasingly being used as a functional food, especially in baby food. In recent years it has also been used particularly as a dietary supplement for pregnant women and older people .
Lactoferrin from pasture milk - with the well-being of humans and animals in mind
Lactoferrin is obtained from milk. But hardly any provider seems to deal with the origin.
We spared no effort to source our lactoferrin from pasture-raised animals and had to look as far as New Zealand due to a lack of closer alternatives. In New Zealand, like in Ireland, the full pasture system prevails.
Lactoferrin is often mentioned in connection with colostrum. Colostrum has the highest proportion of lactoferrin. However, it is not necessary to misuse the “first milk” for this purpose. Using state-of-the-art processes, our manufacturing partner is able to extract high-quality, pure lactoferrin from conventional milk.
